Employers in the Classroom
Georgia Mountains Works Educators collaborated to create an “Employer in the Classroom” resource. The purpose is to make it easier for employers to say yes to Educators when asked to speak to students and to help presenters be relevant to students. As a part of the collaboration, educators stated that talking about income for both their initial job and after they experienced some career development is important. Equally as important is mentioning Work Based Learning (WBL) options available at the company. A facilitated activity beats pictures or videos.
What is most important to include in your presentation?
- Orient the students to your company location and what you do/make.
- How and when they can get hired and what a career path looks like there including $/hour.
- Pictures of your company, the people, the product (or a video)
- A facilitated activity that students will remember, you are welcome to bring swag/giveaways or prizes for the winners.
Download and adapt this provided resource for your company’s next presentation to students.
More tips for presenting to students:
- WHO AM I? Tell me your story. How did you get where you are? You are representing yourself, your company, and your career.
- WHERE? Tell them where your company is (city, near something they would know).
- WHAT? Bring what you manufacture and pass it around if possible. What is a daily routine like at your company?
- HOW? What is an entry level position? What is income for that and for a top position? What kind of training do you need to get in that position? How long will it take to “climb the ladder”? Students do not often realize that they do not just walk in and get the job if they want it. How to get an interview? How long is the interview process? If you hire work-based learning (WBL) Students, tell the how.
- SHOW ME: It is important to engage the kids in an activity to relate to your presentation. We have provided some ideas.
- TIPS: Use everyday terms. Avoid using acronyms. Use this as a career development opportunity for a “junior” employee.
Finally, share your experience with others on your company social media and send it to Georgia Mountains Works.
